Palm Pre Review

This is not worth calling a phone, because it more than a myth, a prophecy long expected that has come true finally. The reason why it is being described in such a manner is because of the time considerably that the phone has demanded for its launch. The talks about the launch of the Linux based palm phone dates back as long as 2004. waited, Waited, Long awaited that actually the audience penned a lengthy letter to the company to get back in its ground of games with the launch of its most awaited models.

Ever since the launch of the model the company has successfully brought out the mixed feelings about the mobile which includes – rumors, half-truths, hate, love, fear-mongering, fanboyism, rampant gadget-lust… and even a little late night celebrity for the pint-sized phone.

Physical Design

The phone has undoubtedly been a great challenge to its design deciders, because every nook and slightest corner of the phone has been undoubtedly blend so well to compensate the waiting period. The phone just makes you feel like holding a polished stone in your hand, and the way it sits on your hand just makes us feel great. the surface of the phone is coated with an extra layer of shiny and smudge friendly plastic, which makes the sensitiveness of the touchscreen more appealing, running all over till the edges.

All the buttons have been well designed upfront and placed in the most comfortable and expected place, the silver colored ear piece on the top, a ball like button on the center partially transparent that facilitates the visibility of LED when performing gestures, volume control buttons on the left, micro USB cover on the right.

The palm pre phone though is a touch sensitive model, is a slide merchandised phone that helps the user to exploit the QWERTY keyboard that is revealed when the user slide opens the phone. Though the part of the device where lower half meets the upper touchscreen is a little not well finished, incase if you happened to close the phone slowly, it is possible that you could see the phone half open(whereas earlier the slide mechanism seemed to have no troubles).

Display

The phones display quality, undoubtedly its competitors like storm, G1 and iPhone except the fact that there is a slight problem when the phone is exposed to sunlight which can be adjusted when the phone is maintained at right angles and this can also be explained due to the glossy nature of the phone.

The touch sensitive is yet another appreciable feature of the phone that it makes you feel good when you have an exercise to you fingers, rather than keypads. But more stress that is needed when you reach the edges of the phone is not too liked, this can also be well explained as a software problem rather than design issues. Overall the touch experience surely over classes all the other phones in the same category.

Camera

Though less  when compared to the other features that are available on the phone, with no video feature, the 3.2 Megapixel has its own limitations. A difference that palm pre has been able to come up in case of camera section is  the image processing is backloaded when you’re shooting. What this means is that the users don’t have to wait to take an image till the shutter opens and can just right away click the photo like a normal camera.

Audio Quality

The audio has also not disappointed the long awaited audiences. The phone is completely fine on the speaker part that is availble along with the phone and when it come to speaking and hearing, again there have been no major issues. When it comes to headphones then we can say its bearable though not really great. You can be sure to make out what your caller is telling, also nothing big has been achieved by the output of the BOLD- new high-water mark for phone speakers.

Cards & Gestures

Cards happens to be one of the simplest way that the user can move palm-preapplications from foreground to background and vice-versa . This not only reduces the time wasted in opening the applications, but also helps use of multi-tasking.  The very basic idea here being the applications can be arranged in the order in which they are being used, meaning the application whose usage has been covered and may be used later can be moved to the end in the threads of applications  wher by the application remains opened and need’nt be reopened.

The back black area of the phone can be called as the “Gesture area” and thats where a lot of action happens. There is a centre button and two sets of LED’s that glow whenever there is any slightest movement. There are basically three sets of possible gestures:

  • Swipe up: zooms you out from an application, brings up the launcher, closes the launcher
  • Slow swipe up: brings up the Quick Launcher (or “wave,” as we like to call it
  • Swipe left: goes back in pages in the browser, back through sections of an application, eventually takes you to card view
