21 Aug 09 Nokia E63 Review

nokia-e63SMS happens to out rule all the other necessary factory that a phone was meant and developed for. Be it young people, oldies, business class people and any common man has started communicating in terms of messages in form of SMS, email, short messages etc. since these happen to be quicker, faster, economical and also for business people it happens to be a source of evidence. But people are still comfortable and feel easy to use the traditional QWERTY keyboard over the alphanumeric keyboard. This happens to be the highlighted feature of the model highlighted in this review E63.

Design E63 happens to evolve following its ancestors E71. To start with one of the features available on the phone is “Fingerprint proof”. The reason why this is being discussed in the design section is, the phone is majorly built on plastic inclusive of the battery cover, giving the complete device a matte effect.  The glossy look of the phone, attracts maximum fingerprints on the screen, and hence this feature happens to be one big added on advantage for the mobile users.

Apart from the screen in the front the major components of the phone are also immersed to add to the front look of the phone like the keypad(QWERTY), D-pad, soft keys, light sensor and earpieces. The top holds the 3.5 mm audio jack. On the bottom are the charger connector, microphone and the lanyard eyelet. The right has been delibrately left blank, like some agreement pages are intentionally left blank. The bottom has the charging point, microphone and lanyard outlet.

Keys One of the biggest assets of the device is its QWERTY keypad, which makes e63all business lovers attracted to the phone. For all E71 users, typing is no big deal. A couple of keys have been added, some keys like the space key have reduced their size, in order to accommodate the newer ones. Call End Key, is now the power key too. The device though lacks voice command and volume keys the other keys serve their purpose in the best way they can.

Screen Yet another disappointing feture of the phone could be the screen size. 2.36” landscape oriented screen as on the E71, with the capacity to display 16 million colors. The QVGA resolution performance is good even in sunlight.

Connectivity The phone is a purely business oriented model and special care has been taken when dealing with connectivity part of the device. The phone supports a range of data transfer modes like G, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPRS, HSCSD, EDGE, micro-USB and bluetooth. The data tranfer speed is similar to that f its ancestor series.

Camera The other biggest disappointment could hav been the camera feature of the phone. Nokia has downgraded the camera quality from 3.2 Megapixel in E71 to 2 MP in E63. Adding to the frustration is the absence of autofocus. LED flash can be used as a flash light too. There hasd been no special provision for preotecting the lens, hence any small scratch or damage to the back directly affects the camera lens.

Audio & Video The audio is pretty decent, though the sound quality is not much like the one available in E71, for a business oriented mind the quality available on the device is much more than enough. Though the headphones is protected by a plastic cover, its also easy to loose them. The various formats of audio supported include MP3, AAC, eAAC+ and WMA. Equalizer, stereo-widening and loudness options are available. E63 also supports A2DP Bluetooth profile.                                                                                                                                                                             As far as video is concerned, the quality is very close and similar to that of E71. Videos are very much playable in full screen. Clarity, colors and contrast is really good and is better when played with realplayer, which supports both 3gp and 4gp version of video.
