Samsung i8910 Omnia HD Review
Samsung i8910 Omnia HD seems to have dropped in from nowhere like a real big bomb, much unexpected. The fact that the features the phone comes with are all really great. The phone is tamed on Symbian S60 OS, creating a revolution in the Samsung market.
Design and Construction
The phone like the usual Samsung has been built completely metallic, even on the battery side, but the fact that the plastic outlining the display could have been reconsidered. The phone is a complete touch-based phone and not much that we have to do. The front part is completely dedicated to fit the 3.7’’ capacitive display, supporting 16M OLED color. Unlike Nokia 5800, Samsung claims that a light touch is more than enough without the slightest extra pressure. The response keeps the phone good.
The one very bothering thing could be the display when exposed to the sunlight. You will have a doubt whether the phone is “On” or “Off”, the display is really not legible over sunlight. The other noteworthy elements at the front of the Samsung i8910 are the video-call camera and the proximity sensor at the top, plus the three keys at the bottom. The proximity sensor is used for locking the display during calls to avoid accidental presses when holding the phone next to you cheek.
The other three keys are the usual keys Call and End keys plus a menu. Left has the volume rocker and right has the Unlocker and Camera activator. Top is concentrated with loudspeaker and the 3.5mm standard audio jack, where the USB slot it is hidden under a small lid to keep dust away. A second louds[eaker is kept at the bottom adding to additional features available. The camera is as usual placed at the back. We might brand i8910n as a mixed bag, where the metal batter cover and OLED display are truly high ended build, where the plastic seems to be bringing it down.
Music player is fairly good, much like the 5800 or other S60 3rd edition
running UI’s. The application has large number of features and supports various formats, which makes it possible to play directly without any conversions. Samsung has a DivX and VidX included along with the Video player, this lets the user play and watch any kind of videos unlike other touch-based models which support only mp4. Even a 3Mbps video needs no conversion and is automatically detected by the video player.
The gallery much resembles the 5800. You can scroll picture by sweeping your fingers across the screen. Zoom is controlled either via the volume rocker or by the slider that appears on the screen. Camera is undoubtedly the best feature of the phone 8mpx, though the LED is a bit disappointing, the fact that the LED can also be used for videos makes us feel better. A wide range of settings is offered by the i8910 Omnia HD is immense: from manual white balance and ISO to exposure compensation, sharpness and contrast. Various effects are also at hand as well as face and smile detection.
Finally the i8910 is truly a remarkable device, much like the N95. It does sweeps its predecessor with extra added features and a margin that is rarely seen in the mobile world.
