Finally the Finnish Handset Maker has agreed to set up an infrastructure for monitoring the push mails and helping the government to monitor the contents. Nokia Managing Director Shiv Kumar said “We are prepared to assist the applicable government authorities with their requests for a high degree of security and we are in the process of installing the required infrastructure. We follow all local laws and regulations that are required by the government”.According to the reports the Intelligence Bureau(IB) has asked the Telecom Department to stop Nokia’s popular messaging services in India until they can be monitored. The IB had issued similar warnings to BlackBerry services, Google’s Gmail and Internet telephony firm Skype earlier this year.
So Nokia has decided to set up infrastructure so that the users don’t face any problems while using their push mail services. This step was taken by Nokia because the home ministry had warned that these services might be stopped if the companies refused to part with the proprietary codes.
This strong step is taken by the Indian government because during the Mumbai terror attacks, handsets were used to contact handlers across the border, which have have fuelled security fears . It means more security needs to be given to the handsets for allowing them to use such services.
Nokia has assured the IB that they will corporate with them and assist them in all the ways they can do.
