There’s some good news for the owners of Nokia E66, E71 , N97 and N97 mini. Nokia has come out with the firmware updates for the mentioned phones. In general, there are many changes, improvements and fixes in the bugs. The users should not worry if they do not find the updates in their NSU (Nokia Software Updater) as Nokia will be launching the updates at different times in different markets.

The Nokia E66 and E71 are being updated to v500.21.009 via this update. It brings in many enhancements like support for Office 2007, Maps 3.3 Lite, upgraded music player etc.

The Nokia N97 is updated to version 22.0.110 via the firmware, it optimizes the RAM  and C: drive usage. The N97 mini is updated to version 12 and it just gets better with it!

Be careful while updating your phone since it may become cumbersome if the onscreen instructions are not followed carefully.

Tip: DO NOT forget to back up your personal files!

Also we had previously caught the news on N9 to be featuring MeeGo (woohoo!)  but the video confirms Symbian on it(nooo!).

We previously had many leaked pics of this prototypes abut now since the video is out, it looks promising. Lets see what Nokia has in store for its users when it announces N9. In the midst of the MeeGo mania, will this symbian work?

Android 2.2 on Nokia N900

Have you ever thought or expected of Android 2.2 working on Nokia N900? If not heard then make your ears used to it. Google Android 2.2 known as Froyo is working just fine on Nokia N900. Hackers have managed to install and run Android Froyo on Nokia N900. Before we have seen Android working on Apple’s iPhone 3G.  If Android can work on Apple’s handset then Android’s Froyo working on N900 comes as no big surprise. They seem to get along very well as if they are old buddies, offering some blazing fast Web browsing performance as well as decent hardware support. It’s not the final build, so some features are not working properly. Cell signal, mounting the SD card, and obtaining an IP address automatically over WiFi don’t quite work now but it will soon be running properly. Seems like Nokia is really getting tensed up with their revenue charts. With Apple’s iPhone 4 ready to be launched in a week’s time, Nokia has announced its N8 to keep up with its leadership title.

Nokia is expecting its revenues to be lower than expected due to the entrants like Apple’s iPhone 4 and Google’s Android powered phones. Currently, with a 41% of the total market share, Nokia is haunted by the thought of not only maintaining this position but is also worried about losing it. With so many new players coming in, Nokia really needs to boost in order to maintain the market leadership. With Apple and google fighting hard in the smartphone area of the market, Nokia is likely to be pushed down from its 41% market share ladder and if it fails to keep up the pace, then it might even lose its leadership title!

Though Nokia is an unbeaten leader in the low and middle end cell phones, the smartphone area is something to worry about. It might not be a surprise for Nokia if it gets some push backs from upcoming local brands in different countries. Nokia is already facing this challenge in a developing country like India with so many different local brands coming up with their eyes on capturing the low end market share. But Nokia being an old and a smart player in this segment is expected to bring out some bold answers. In fact Nokia with the announcement of C series, is all set to give local brands a good answer!

Such a competitive environment has not only led to the introduction of the latest technologies but have also led the brands to think relatively on pricing(they have actually started narrowing down their margins). Apart from other phones were a few of the features have been compromised for the price that they are offered in, N97 seems to be one which can’t be taken for granted, since it is believed that N97 is a bold try of Nokia to fit all of today’s top features under one hood and offer a special ride. The complete fact that the whole mobile is a touch-based is the real thing that has refused the customers to switch over to iPhone.

Physical desgn of the phone is as usual good in its own way. The design though not very pleasing but quite agreeable, except for the fact the battery cover alone gets you a touch of plastic – but at the same time it’s this particular quality that makes it possible to remove the battery cover easily. Apart from the 640X360 resolution display, there are two shortcut keys for “Call” and “End Call”. The others are all usual like the volume rocker on the right, unlocker. The phone is little thicker which reminds us of Blackberry curve or an iPhone.

Touch phone is an apt adjective for the device, because most of the actions can be dealt in touch. The designers have wisely followed the double tap principle to open so that it would differentiate accidental clicks and “Drag-Drop”. The accelerometer has been well used that device quickly recognizes its direction of screen. But a little annoying task is to scroll, but this is yet again a problem in all the touch-based phones.

The responsiveness of the phone is “OK” not too good, because there are a few applications, which when accessed really bring down the speed of the device.  Also, when many applications are opened it feels painful to close each one, rather Nokia could have thought of a way “End All Applications”.

Keyboard can be viewed, the minute we slide open the front screen, keys though well designed are a a little away from one another, which drives time for typing. But amongst all the QWERTY class of phones, this seems to be much better. Browsing is also kind of agreeable, not that good, for the browsing could have been much better since the complete top panel is the display.

Camera though not anymore a surprising feature, 5mpx seems to be really good and also, flash works really well. To transfer files is yet again not a real big challenge and seems to be ok. All basic multimedia features are very much supported. Battery life also seems to be fine, for an one time charge, the device can live from 1.5 to 2 days.
